The Tyringham Philosophy of Natural Health

The text below has been adapted from an original brochure provided to people interested in visiting Tyringham Clinic as a patient.

The Science of Health
Naturopathy is a system of medicine built up and elaborated as a result of many years of patient investigation into the nature and causes of disease. As a consequence it has become first and foremost a science of health because it recognises that only by restoring and promoting the natural functions of our body can they overcome disease. The power to cure disease lies only within the body itself.

By the promotion of the national processes of assimilation and elimination, and the removal of any obstacles to normal function, our bodies are encouraged to bring their self-healing forces in operation more readily.

Healthy Balance
Our ability to remain well depends on maintaining a harmonious balance between three principal factors. These are emotional (and spiritual) wellbeing, structural freedom and high-quality nourishment to meet our biochemical needs.

If things go wrong with any of these functions we are likely to become unwell and other levels may be affected. Unbalanced or inadequate nourishment, for example, affects our emotional responses and may cause depression, or if we are going through a lot of mental anxiety we are more prone to stiffness of the neck, shoulders and back.

These interactions are presented by the Triad of Health. Energy sits in the centre of the triad and corresponds to the inherent vital reserve of all living things which influences each level of function. Naturopathic medicine gives particular attention to whichever part is the most in need, and often to all – it treats the whole person.

Meeting the Need
We are more concerned with your needs as an individual than with the ‘disease’ with which you might have been labelled.

Every effort is made to determine what is wrong with the patient and investigations, such as blood test and x-rays, are carried out if considered necessary. But the naturopathic diagnosis is conducted mainly to reveal possible disturbances of function which may affect the health. These often cannot be determined solely from normal medical tests.

The Basic Principles
Naturopathic medicine is based on three principles which are the foundations of the treatment we provide at Tyringham.

  1. All disease had one cause.
  2. Some acute diseases may be beneficial.
  3. The body is a self-healing organism.

The Cause of Disease
The cause of most chronic diseases is a breakdown of the adaptive and eliminative functions of the body. The accumulated residues of unhealthy food, environmental poisons, inadequate exercise and negative emotions, may all lead to clogging of tissues and breakdown of immunity which creates a suitable see bed for disease.

Infections with bacteria and viruses or degenerative changes can only establish themselves if these conditions are present.

The Purpose of Disease
Some acute diseases may be simply an indication of the body’s vitality at work burning up or eliminating impurities. Colds, fevers, diarrhoea, rashes and other inflammatory symptoms are recognised as part of the body’s effort at recovery. If suppressed with antibiotics, creams and painkillers, the basic causes only remain to flare up again later.

Naturopathic treatment tries to assist your body in eliminative efforts, containing the reactions within your own tolerance and capabilities without surprising the symptoms.
